Progesterone is a hormone made by the ovaries that helps prepare the uterus for a fertilized egg to implant and grow. If a woman gets pregnant, progesterone continues to support the pregnancy. If she doesn’t get pregnant, progesterone levels drop and this triggers the start of her menstrual period.
