The stomach is a muscular sac that secretes acid and digestive enzymes to break down food in order to extract nutrients from it. The stomach can hold up to 2.5 litres of food and drink, but typically contains much less. The emptying of the stomach, known as gastric emptying, is a complex process controlled by the nervous system and various hormones.
