Atoms have a strong affinity to complete their outer shells. This is called the octet rule and is usually accomplished by sharing, gaining, or losing electrons with other atoms. When atoms come together and share or transfer their electrons, they can form strong connections called chemical bonds. This process can result in the formation of a variety of different molecules and compounds.
