Nobelium is a human-made element that belongs to a special group of elements called the actinides. It was first created in a laboratory in 1966 using a machine called a particle accelerator. Nobelium is highly radioactive meaning it gives off radiation which can be harmful if we get too close to it. Because of this, it has no practical use outside of scientific research.
