The Rock Cycle

The rock cycle is a process that involves the transformation of rocks from one type to another over geological time. It includes different stages:

  1. Weathering and erosion of existing rocks
  2. Transportation and deposition of sediments
  3. Compaction and cementation of sediments to form sedimentary rocks
  4. Metamorphism of existing rocks due to heat and pressure that creates metamorphic rocks
  5. Melting of all types of rocks, and solidification of the molten materials to form igneous rocks
