Electrolytes
Electrolytes are electrically charged particles that are essential for the normal functioning of our body. These particles include ions like sodium, potassium, calcium, and chloride. You might already be familiar with some of these names because they are found in common table salt and certain foods.
Our cells need electrolytes to carry electrical signals, which help them communicate and perform their specialized tasks. For example, muscles, including the heart, use electrolytes like sodium, potassium, and calcium to contract and relax properly. Likewise, electrolytes help our nerves transmit signals and control our body’s water balance.
When we sweat a lot during physical activities or when we’re sick, we lose electrolytes. That’s why it’s important to drink fluids that contain electrolytes, especially during exercise or when we’re unwell. Sports drinks and rehydration solutions often have electrolytes to replenish what our body has lost.
