Mercury is a small, dense planet that is mostly made up of rock and metal. It has a very thin atmosphere and no moons. Because it is so close to the sun, its surface temperatures can reach up to 800 degrees Fahrenheit (430 degrees Celsius) during the day and drop to -290 degrees Fahrenheit (-180 degrees Celsius) at night.
