Extinction
Extinction is a normal part of the evolutionary process, but in recent times, the rate of extinction has been much higher than the natural background rate. This is largely due to human activities such as deforestation, habitat destruction, overfishing, pollution, and hunting or poaching. Climate change is also having a significant impact on biodiversity by changing the conditions in which species can survive and disrupting the timing of important natural events like migration or breeding. Conservation efforts are being made to help protect endangered species and prevent further extinctions, but these efforts must be coupled with larger systemic changes to address the root causes of extinction.
