Hair is made up of a protein called keratin, which also makes up our nails and the outer layer of our skin. Hair grows from follicles in our skin, and each hair can live for several years before falling out and being replaced by a new hair. The color of our hair is determined by pigments called melanin, which are produced by specialized cells in our hair follicles.
