Explain Science

Americium is primarily used for its radioactive properties, particularly its ability to emit alpha particles. Its isotopes can be used in smoke detectors, as well as in some nuclear reactor designs to control neutron population. However, americium isotopes can also produce harmful radiation, so proper handling and disposal are critical to prevent exposure. Because of its potential uses in both civilian and military applications, it is tightly regulated by international organizations such as the International Atomic Energy Agency.
