Americium is a man-made element that was first created in 1944 by scientists working on the Manhattan Project. It has several isotopes, or variations of the element, but the most commonly used is americium-241. This isotope is used in smoke detectors, which work by detecting the ionization of air particles caused by alpha particles emitted from the americium.
