Fermium is a synthetic element that was first produced by the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California in 1952. It is created by bombarding lighter elements with neutrons in a nuclear reactor. Fermium is so unstable that it can only be produced in extremely small quantities and has a very short half-life, which means it rapidly decays into other elements.
