Explain Science

Radon is a type of radioactive gas that occurs naturally in the environment. It comes from the breakdown of uranium in soil and rocks. When radon is released from the ground, it can enter homes through cracks in the foundation or gaps around pipes and cables.

Breathing in radon for long periods of time can increase the risk of lung cancer. Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States. Testing your home for radon and properly venting it can reduce the risk of exposure.
