Furosemide (Lasix)
Furosemide, marketed under the brand name Lasix, is a loop diuretic medication commonly prescribed to treat various conditions including hypertension (high blood pressure), edema (fluid retention), and congestive heart failure. It works by blocking the reabsorption of sodium, chloride, and water in the kidneys, leading to increased urine production and subsequent removal of excess fluids from the body. By reducing fluid volume, furosemide helps lower blood pressure and alleviate swelling. It is typically taken orally, but can also be administered intravenously for more severe cases. Like any medication, furosemide carries certain risks and side effects, so it is important to consult with a healthcare professional and follow their guidance for safe and effective use.
