Nuclear Physics

The nucleus is the part of the atom that contains protons and neutrons. Nuclear reactions occur when the nucleus of an atom is changed in some way. This can happen through radioactive decay, where an unstable nucleus breaks down, or through nuclear fusion or fission, where two nuclei combine or split apart. These reactions can release a lot of energy in the form of radiation, which is why they must be carefully controlled in nuclear power plants.
