Rockets work because they carry both fuel and oxidizer on board. When the fuel and oxidizer mix together and ignite, they create a huge amount of hot gas. This hot gas is directed out of the back of the rocket, creating thrust that propels the rocket forward. Rockets can also change direction by using small thrusters that control their orientation and movement in space.
