Explain Science

Comets

A comet is a small object made up of rock, ice, and dust. Its core can range in size from a few meters to tens of kilometers wide. As a comet approaches the sun, it heats up and releases gas and dust, creating its characteristic coma (an envelope of gas and dust that surrounds the nucleus) and tail. Comets come from the outer reaches of the solar system and can be seen from Earth with the naked eye.
