Vitamins
Vitamins are essential organic compounds that our bodies need in small amounts to function properly. They play important roles in various bodily processes such as metabolism, growth, and immune function. There are 13 essential vitamins that our bodies cannot produce on their own, so we must obtain them from the foods we eat or through supplements.
Vitamins are categorized into two groups: fat-soluble and water-soluble. Fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K) are stored in the body’s fatty tissues and can be stored for longer periods. Water-soluble vitamins (B vitamins and vitamin C) are not stored in the body and are eliminated through urine, so they need to be consumed regularly.
Each vitamin has specific functions. For example, vitamin A is important for vision, vitamin D helps with calcium absorption and bone health, vitamin E acts as an antioxidant to protect our cells, and vitamin C supports our immune system and helps with collagen production. Different foods contain different vitamins, so it’s important to eat a balanced diet that includes a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins.
