Galaxies are immense collections of stars, interstellar gas, and dark matter that exist throughout the universe. These enormous structures began to form shortly after the Big Bang, when clumps of matter started to form and accumulate through gravity. Over billions of years, galaxies continued to evolve and grow, merging with other galaxies and forming new stars and planetary systems.
