Carbohydrates
Carbohydrates are one of the three main types of nutrients, along with proteins and fats, that our bodies need for energy. They are made up of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen atoms. Carbohydrates can be found in various foods such as grains (bread, rice, cereal), starchy vegetables (potatoes, corn), fruits, and dairy products.
Carbohydrates are classified into two main types: simple carbohydrates and complex carbohydrates. Simple carbohydrates are made up of one or two sugar molecules and are quickly digested in the body. They can be found in foods like candy, soda, and sugary snacks. Complex carbohydrates, on the other hand, are made up of many sugar molecules linked together and take longer to digest. They can be found in foods like whole grains, legumes, and vegetables.
When we eat carbohydrates, our body breaks them down into smaller sugar molecules, such as glucose, which our cells can use for energy. Glucose is especially important for our brain, as it relies heavily on this sugar for fuel. If we consume more carbohydrates than our body needs for immediate energy, the excess will be stored in our liver and muscles as glycogen for later use.
It’s important to choose healthier sources of carbohydrates like whole grains, fruits, and vegetables, as they provide us with essential vitamins, minerals, and fiber. Fiber, found in complex carbohydrates, helps keep our digestive system healthy and can prevent constipation.
