Macronutrients
Macronutrients are the nutrients that our bodies need in large quantities to provide energy and support growth and development. There are three primary macronutrients: carbohydrates, proteins, and fats.
Carbohydrates are one of the main sources of energy for our bodies. They are found in foods like bread, rice, pasta, and fruits. When we eat carbohydrates, our bodies break them down into glucose, which is used for immediate energy or stored in the liver and muscles as glycogen for later use.
Proteins are essential for building and repairing tissues in our body, such as muscles, skin, and organs. They also play a role in many important functions like hormone production and immune system support. Good sources of protein include meat, fish, poultry, legumes, and dairy products.
Fats, despite having a bad reputation, are actually important for our health. They provide long-term energy storage, help absorb fat-soluble vitamins, and provide insulation and protection to our organs. Healthy sources of fats include avocados, nuts, seeds, and olive oil.
It’s important to have a balanced diet that includes all three macronutrients in the right proportions. Different people have different needs depending on factors like age, sex, activity levels, and health conditions.
