Understanding Uranus
Uranus is a gaseous planet that is often referred to as an ice giant. Its atmosphere is primarily composed of hydrogen and helium, with trace amounts of methane, which gives the planet its blue-green hue. Uranus is also unique because it is the only known planet in our solar system that rotates on its side. In addition, Uranus has an incredibly strong magnetic field, which is tilted at a steep angle relative to its rotational axis. This magnetic field traps charged particles from the solar wind and energizes them, causing the auroras observed at Uranus. Although Uranus has many fascinating features, we have limited knowledge of the planet due to the fact that it has only been visited by one spacecraft, Voyager 2, in 1986.
